  • Purpose - we cannot stress enough how important is to have identified a higher purpose that everyone in your organisation can subscribe to. This isn't just a sentence you add to your website. Your founders or senior executives will need to have full buy in into your higher purpose and they need to make it their main job to explain and promote this higher purpose and make sure that everyone understands it. Failing this first step means all following steps might be futile. 
  • Autonomy -  Once you have a higher purpose that your people can subscribe to, it's time to give them freedom to be their best selves at work. When you hire smart people and you expect them to be motivated and productive you need to provide them with sufficient autonomy so they can unleash their talent and their ideas and make miracles happen. Yes, releasing control is hard to do. But there is no way around it. You need to come to terms with allowing sufficient autonomy.
  • Mastery - Having established a great higher purpose that your senior people are committed to promoting and discussing with your people and having provided your talented employees with the autonomy they need, you can move to the third part - making it easy for them to master their craft. The smart people you hired don't go to work just for their pay check. They are usually great at their craft and allowing them to continue developing their skills is the best investment you can make, much better than pizza Fridays or free chocolate bars.
