Why make Jira Apps?
Many of you would know that Kanban is a visual system that allows teams or individuals to make all their work visible. Kanban can help you visualise your workflow and more importantly it can help you actively manage the flow of work in order to improve delivery and forecasting. However if you are to benefit from the data about the flow of your work, there are certain metrics or values that need to be recorded, calculated and visualised. I often find that even if Jira records these, they are not easily available to us and making them available with Jira is often difficult, requires some Administrator work (typically performed by a team not really willing to do it) or requires a lot of repetitive manual work.
To help you (and myself) out, I decided to create several free Jira apps to make it easier to record and visualise things like Work Item Start Date, Cycle time, Work Item Age and more. At the time of writing I am not clear if these will be separate apps or combined into one but that shouldn't make a lot of difference.
Every app or every metric has its own separate page with an overview and instructions about using it.
You can find our apps on the Attlassian Marketplace. They are all available for Jira Cloud Software.

- Work Item Essentials - A free app that allows configuring what transitions trigger the recording of a work item start date and calculation of Work Item Age
- Kanban charts - this app provides important charts like a Cycle Time Scatter Plot, Aging Work In Progress and Throughput History Trend. More charts will be added in the future. You are able to select one or more issue types, and then either use our free app for the work item age field or use your own cycle time numeric field and you can select a timeframe for your chart. This will give you an instant scatter plot with a few common percentile lines, your Aging Work In Progress items and a Throughput History Trend. More charts coming soon!
